About us The Mount Kisco Frame Shop was established in 1977 and has been in the same retail space in Westchester County since that time. We specialize in custom framing with an emphasis on conservation framing. Some of our specialties include oversize works, period reproduction frames, art and frame restoration, object framing, needlework, frame selection and customer service. Our 2 full time staff members and the owner of MKFS have between 20 to 30 years experience each in the framing industry. LuAnn, Laura and Greg all bring a deep understanding of the process to every framing project, from design to completion. Art placement, installation, delivery/pick up and storage and collection management are also an added bonus in the repertoire of what MKFS provides. Contact owner Greg Hare to inquire about these services. MKFS can also accommodate corporate framing projects, art appraisals and the sale and procurement of fine works of art. Our History The Mount Kisco Frame Shop was founded by Patricia and Bruce Macaulay. It was a mixture of custom and do-it-yourself framing (which was popular at the time), ready made frames and some preframed artwork. It was actually a shared space with a hair salon in the back. You can still see some remnant décor in what is now our cutting and joining area. LuAnn remembers that when she first started in 1979, she would join frames in the front window with a vice and nails watching the much lighter traffic pattern go by. Today she uses a pneumatic underpinner to join frames - it's much more efficient. The shop shifted to focusing solely on custom framing and expanded into the salon's former space. Staffing grew as the business flourished during the 1980's. All the while MKFS kept up with the rising standards in the custom framing industry that was moving towards conservation framing practices no longer reserved only for museums and fine art collectors. In the late 1990's the Macaulays were looking to ease out of the business and move towards retirement. Through the suggestion of a foot doctor who was a close friend of the Macaulay's, a young patient of his met the couple who were looking for a new hire. The 29 year old was a perfect fit to help lessen the hours of Mr. Macaulay and bring new knowledge and ideas to an already seasoned and professional staff. |
The young man had already experienced almost 10 years in the industry starting in a shop similar to MKFS in White Plains. He then had the good fortune to further his knowledge at 2 prestigious Manhattan firms, APF/Munn Master Frame Makers and Julius Lowy Frame and Restoration Company. In both businesses, he learned extensively of the history of the picture frame, period frames, gilding, restoration as well as museum level conservation framing techniques and practices. He also became a fine art installer for both companies and continues to provide this service today. Now the owner of MKFS for the past 5 years, Gregory Clark Hare continues to work with his talented and wonderful staff to provide the fullest range of products and services. Exceptional customer service is a top priority that is paired with the ability and knowledge to frame almost anything from a treasured child's drawing to a museum cataloged artist's work. All are handled with the same attentive care. |
